The eye of the law guards
I saw this TERRIFIC exhibition at Museum Ludwig while I was on my European photography research trip. None of the photographs are available online, so I am grateful that I took some iPhone installation images while I was there.
Tight, focused social documentary images that have real presence and power. They feel cooly and directly observed, essential, gritty, a unique take on an in/hospitable institution and the people in it. The word Havelhöhe translates to “hospital”. Katz was there for 18 months for the treatment of tuberculosis.
I admire the light, subject matter and the photographer’s point of view, his frontal and demanding perspective.

BenÂjamin Katz became known in the 1980s as a fixture of the art scene in West Germany. He took portraits of artists such as GeÂorg Baselitz, James Lee Byars, A.R. Penck, Cindy ShÂerÂman, and RoseÂmarie TrockÂel, phoÂtoÂgraphed the bustling art scene at openings, and docÂuÂmentÂed the creÂaÂtion of major exÂhiÂbiÂtions such as WestÂkunst in Cologne in 1981, docÂuÂmenÂta 7 in KasÂsel in 1982, and von hiÂer aus in DüsÂselÂdorf in 1984.
On the ocÂcaÂsion of the eightieth birthday of Benjamin Katz (born on June 14, 1939, in AnÂtwÂerp, BelÂgiÂum), the MuÂseÂum LudÂwig will present his series of photographs BerÂlin HavelÂhöhe (1960/1961), which has never before been shown in its enÂtireÂty. The series was reÂcentÂly acquired diÂrectÂly from the artist’s archive. Even before Katz deÂvotÂed himself proÂfesÂsioÂnÂalÂly to phoÂtogÂraÂphy, he captured his surÂroundÂings in 1960 and 1961 during an eighteen-month stay at the HavelÂhöhe hospital. SufÂferÂing from tuÂberÂcuÂloÂsis, he spent his time there as a patient and phoÂtoÂgraphed evÂeryÂday life: his fellow patients, the hosÂpiÂtal staff, the buildings built during the Nazi era as an air force academy, and the surÂroundÂing area. The phoÂtoÂgraphs repÂreÂsent a socio-historical as well as an artistic and perÂsoÂnoal docÂuÂment, since they record Katz’s beÂginÂnÂings as a photographer. BerÂlin HavelÂhöhe also exÂemÂpliÂfies the image of the artist as a young man.
DiÂrecÂtor YilÂmaz Dziewior: “The MuÂseÂum LudÂwig has a large colÂlecÂtion of Katz’s porÂtraits of artists spanÂnÂing sevÂerÂal deÂcades. It alÂso inÂcludes his exÂtenÂsive docuÂmenÂtaÂtion of the 1981 exÂhiÂbiÂtion WestÂkunst as well as phoÂtoÂgraphs from the inÂsÂtalÂlaÂtion of many exÂhiÂbiÂtions. I am all the more deÂlightÂed that we were able to acÂquire BerÂlin HavelÂhöhe, a sigÂniÂfÂiÂcant earÂly seÂries by Katz. We would like exÂpress our warmest thanks for his trust and for sharÂing his meÂmÂories with us.”
The enÂtire seÂries will be shown in the form of forÂty-one phoÂtoÂgraphs printÂed in three difÂferÂent sizes and 318 vinÂtage prints mountÂed on A4 paÂper. On the first floor, as part of the perÂmaÂnent colÂlecÂtion, the MuÂseÂum LudÂwig will alÂso preÂsent Katz’s well-known porÂtraits of artists, which he took durÂing his stuÂdio visÂits beginÂnÂing in the 1980s, inÂcludÂing GeÂorg Baselitz, A.R. Penck, GerÂhard Richter, and RoseÂmarie TrockÂel.
BenÂjamin Katz: BerÂlin HavelÂhöhe, 1960/1961 is the sixth preÂsenÂtaÂtion in the phoÂtogÂraÂphy room, which since 2017 has feaÂtured changÂing seÂlecÂtions of the approxÂiÂmateÂly 70,000 works from the MuÂseÂum LudÂwig phoÂtogÂraÂphy colÂlecÂtion. The phoÂtogÂraÂphy room is loÂcatÂed in the perÂmaÂnent colÂlecÂtion on the seÂcond floor.
