Thank you for posting the photos of the exhibition! 🙂 They’ll be very useful as a reference for the essay I’m writing!
Very often I will spend time in front of a group of paintings by one artist or another, and have a reasonably good chance of knowing what he/she was on about. For example when the NGV did blockbusters on the French Impressionists and on the Heidelberg School, I remembered enough from art history at uni, or from reading since, to make intelligent comment throughout the collections.
But that was not at all true for Dali. His images seem surreal (of course) but also psychotic, drunk or from random dreamstates. So it was excellent that the NGV put on an all-day seminar on Dali, bringing together some of the most involved Dali thinkers from Australia and overseas. It became clear that Dali’s symbols were meaningful and carefully thought out.
Even when Dali acted very badly in real life, his huge body of work remains as a testament to an energetic and creative thinker.
